Aim
The aim of this diploma is to provide education and
training for general dental practitioners to enable them to
practise implant dentistry to a high standard in the best
interest of the patient.
Course components
There are three course components:
- Contact learning component: 15 interactive units with
practical surgical exercises
- Clinical component: evidence from work-based training
- Distance learning: critical reading and completion of
assignment topics
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the dentist would have
gained the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to:
- Define the treatment that is most suitable for the patient
and to plan all stages of treatment and bring them to a
successful conclusion.
- Communicate effectively with the patient outlining the
benefits of the treatment proposed.
- Carry out any procedures required to augment any deficient
sites within the capabilities of the clinician.
- Carry out surgical and restorative aspects of implant
therapy, providing the patient with the aesthetic and functional
restorations to a high degree of predictability.
- Monitor and maintain the treatment that has been completed
for the patient.
Accreditation
Successful clinicians will be accredited by means of an RCS
Diploma, which should provide an acknowledged standard for
patients, health authorities, insurance agencies, teaching
institutions and government bodies.
The Diploma can also be upgraded to an MSc by a further 60
credits of flexible learning/research in association with
the Institute of Dentistry and The London, Queen Mary’s
School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Venues
The diploma will be conducted in the main at The
Royal College of Surgeons of England. However, some of the
components will require travel to universities in Europe to
complete specific topics.
